While Building Information Modelling (BIM) is relatively new to the architectural, engineering and construction industry, M+A Architects recognized the amazing benefits this form of collaborative design can bring to a project early on. For this reason, we chose to implement it in our office over four years ago.
With BIM, a project is modelled in 3D, allowing our clients to better visualize the final design. We can create rough animations of the actual building so that our clients can see a more exact representation of what will be built before construction begins. In contrast to traditional hand-drafting and CAD, the lines and shapes drafted in BIM have intelligence. For example, a door is not simply a rectangle, it is a modeled object. Embedded in the object is all the data and information associated with that door, including the size, swing, material, fire rating, R-value, hardware, and whatever other information we choose to include. Likewise, every object in the BIM model can contain similar information that can be accessed like a database to assist in sustainable energy modeling, recyclable material tracking, construction take-off estimating, and specification writing. Our clients can also use this database model to help maintain and manage the building after construction is completed.
Since committing to the BIM process, M+A continues to complete projects using the latest versions of Revit Architecture, the leading BIM software by AutoDesk. We have built up an extensive library of components and details that we incorporate into our models, and our staff continues our education on the software. M+A also teams with consultant partners experienced in BIM to merge 3D models of the structural, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. This collaborative process allows us to perform collision detection between building systems and avoid costly modifications in the field. With our proven experience and capable staff, M+A can provide all the great benefits to our clients that BIM has to offer!
The number of projects M+A Architects has either completed or currently has active in our office using BIM technology. We have completed many of these with fully integrated models that included Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing Engineering as well as Structural Engineering within the model. Many other architectural firms who are building projects in BIM still do not offer this full integration.
